Teaching Sight Words
I have been teaching sight words to my kinderkids all year. Our school district broke the Common Core sight words into groups that the kids must know for each quarter of the school year. I still have some kids that do not know all of the words from the first quarter. I am looking for some new ways to teach sight words. I have used concentration games and flash cards. Do you have any suggestions for games that I could create or find to use to help my kinderkids learn these sight words? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried Deanna Jump's popcorn word work? Lots of words and different ways to learn them. I love it! Hope that helps.
ReplyDeleteMy team and I noticed a deficit in our students sight word recognition as well. In the past, I have used Heidisongs to teach the sight words. The kids loved it! I didn't use them at the beginning of this year and should have. You can get her Sing and Spell the Sight Words CDs and DVDs on her website www.heidisongs.com. There are a few samples on youtube as well. Check out this video for the sight word play http://www.youtube.com/user/gbutkus#p/u/20/9Hfw5szYDEY.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the sweet comment on my blog. I actually got the sign from Wise Owl Workshop. I believe you can find her on Etsy. I love it and highly recommend it! What a sweet gift for your hubby! :)

Are you on Pinterest? If so, go to my boards (Patricia Moore) and look at my Tutoring Time board. I have pinned lots of different sight word games/activities.

We play a game called boom. I took all the sight words and put them on Popsicle sticks and then you add some sticks with the words boom. I put them in a pringle can. They draw out a word and if they can read they can keep it. If they get a boom, they have to put all their sticks back in the can. I think this is a Dr. Jean idea.
ReplyDeleteI also use Krissy Miner's packet and Fran Kramer's sight words that rock your room packet. I have a couple of games on my Teacher's Notebook store. One uses hammers and my kids love it.
