Read Across America Week 2016

This past week was one of my favorite weeks of the school year. I simply LOVE teaching about Dr. Seuss and all of his wonderful books. He makes me want to read more to my students and this week we have had so many read-alouds.

My class did our first directed drawing of The Cat in the Hat from First Grade Blue Skies and they were so excited. I think they were precious!

Our school also participated in Read Across America Week 2016 by having 3 school spirit days starting on Dr. Seuss's birthday on Wednesday. I got some birthday hats from Dollar Tree for my students to wear and another wonderful teacher friend of mine made these adorable shirts for us to wear. She made our panda mascot wearing a Seuss hat and she put a different Seuss quote on the back of each person's shirt. I LOVE mine and I can wear it every year!

Thursday we celebrated Fox in Socks by wearing silly, crazy socks! I wore these silly apple socks! I rolled up my pant legs so you could see them better. I posted this picture on Thursday on Instagram which I am LOVING using since I can post it quickly!

Friday we celebrated our favorite Seuss characters. I dressed as The Cat in the Hat and my kiddos LOVED it! I had a couple of Things show up for school along with another Cat in the Hat. I also had a Sneetch and a couple of Foxes in Socks. They were precious!

Hope you had a great Read Across America week! Have a great rest of your weekend!

Five for Friday - Feb. 27, 2015

For today's post, I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for her Five for Friday linky party.

This was a busy but weird week. We had a regular school day on Monday, no school Tuesday due to winter weather, delayed start Wednesday due to ice, and regular school day Thursday and delayed start due to temperatures and the threat of ice Friday. Here are some pictures from my weird week:

This was a picture of one of the trees beside my house during the freezing rain storm we had in coastal SC on Tuesday. It looks pretty but it was COLD! I am just so glad we didn't lose power for this storm!

My sweet girl loved pulling down the icicles off my flagpole after the ice storm on Tuesday. She is fascinated by ice and this just made her smile. I love those sweet dimples!

We read The Cat in the Hat this week and my kinders wrote about their favorite part of the story. I thought their illustrations were absolutely adorable!!

My mom stuck this note in my lunch this week and it made me smile so I stuck it on my laptop so I can see it everyday at school. She was writing it from M and her!

This was my sweet girl before I had to come to work. She is always ready to have her picture taken as you can tell!

Now head on over to Doodle Bugs Teaching blog to see all the other Five for Friday posts! Have a great weekend!

Dr. Seuss Is On The Loose!

Last week and this week we have been working on our Dr. Seuss unit. This is one of my favorite units that we do all year! This year has been lots of fun as well!

After reading The Cat in the Hat, my kinders completed the rhyming hats game from Kelly's Kindergarten. This was a rather difficult activity for some of my kinders, but it was a nice challenge.

We made these adorable Cats in the Hats by following written directions. The kids loved doing this craft!
This picture didn't upload correctly.
After reading Green Eggs and Ham, we practiced adding during our small group math time. The kids used the plates and green eggs from A to Z Teacher Stuff. The kinders rolled a die and put that many eggs on the left side of their plate and then rolled again for the right side. This was a good way to practice addition hands-on.

After reading Ten Apples Up on Top, we used the apples sheet with number words I made to make these adorable ten apples up on top self portraits. They turned out so cute!

To finish off our Dr. Seuss fun, we had a Dr. Seuss day where the kids got to dress like a Dr. Seuss character of their choice. I had lots of Cat in the Hats and Things show up to class. I also had a couple Cindy Lou Who's. They were adorable!

WOW!

I can not believe that it is March already! It seems like we were just celebrating the new year last week and we have already completed 2 months in 2012! Wow...time is going so quickly!

This week we have been celebrating Dr. Seuss. I forgot my camera at school and will post pictures of what we have done so far next week when I get back to school. Today we had a school-wide (over 700 kids) celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday by having a hat parade. It was a lot of fun but it meant the kids were very hyper excited throughout the entire day! Now I am home and trying to relax. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

BTW: I have a new Donors Choose project that I would love to get funded. You can click on the link below to visit my project page. I would appreciate any donations. You can also search for a match code that will double any donations. Thanks in advance!
